As the singular largest participation initiative in the UK, National Fishing Month (NFM) is a great opportunity to meet more anglers.
Thousands of people take part in NFM, most of them new or novice anglers, and a large number will be loyal to where they caught their first fish once they begin to fish regularly.
NFM is run by the Angling Trades Association and supported by its trade members, along with the Angling Trust, Canal and Rivers Trust, Angling Cymru, the Professional Anglers Association and the Environment Agency. The annual event, which benefits from a massive amount of press coverage, boasts over 250 nationwide events each year, and attracts thousands of participants who want to learn to fish.
Getting more people fishing means more business for everyone. You could help your fishery or club in a number of ways:
1] Check the National Fishing Month website www.nationalfishingmonth.com to see which NFM organisers are active locally.
2] Organise your own NFM event – it’s not too late and help is at hand if you need it.
3] Display NFM posters for local events at your fishery, club or on your website or social media. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for a PDF copy of a NFM poster.
4] Create an information area at your fishery or club where new anglers and their parents can get details on your own or other local junior schemes, events, competitions and even local qualified fishing coaches. 5] Network – use your own customer base. Are any of your regular contacts, members or customers teachers, youth workers, community group leaders or police officers? Could they help spread the word about local NFM events or even bring a group of youngsters to an event that you are organising?
6] Ask some of your regular customers or members to volunteer to help out at your own events under the guidance of a Level 2 Angling Trust licensed coach.
7] Do you have a shop on site? Donate prizes for raffle draws, leaflets on ‘special starter kit’ offers, money off coupons to spend in your shop.
8] Daiwa, Pure Fishing and Leeda remain as the headline sponsors for NFM this year. Ask your rep if there are any special deals available so you can sell starter or coaching kits during NFM.
